This final reflection for the 2019 Fall internship covers what I have learned from this experience – what I have gained as a writer, soon-to-be-graduate, researcher, and what skill sets, competencies, and experiences were gained – its challenges and successes. This internship required a great deal of data entry and, while I was passionate about the overall goal and capacity that the information would bring to Dr. Stone project… It
Purpose: Document possible steps towards developing a temporary scanning solution for the digitization of text and books. This project was tentatively though to serve as a potential solution in the event that Reports to the governor of Alaska were unable to be located Problem: The Stonecorp project foresaw potentially digitizing a number of volumes pertinent to its research scope. UAA’s current solution, while adequate in quality, lacked efficient scanning speed.
With this continuation of my internship under Dr. Stone, I hope to further apply the electronic text library – the partial sum of the previous internship’s work and comprised of reports to the commissioner of education – towards finishing a roster of relevant individuals involved in the development, perspective, or enforcement of pedagogy within the territory (and later state) of Alaska. This builds upon the work of Rose Kruger, another
What are your successes at managing your time? Your struggles? What can you do to stay on track or improve managing your time? Has anything surprised you about managing your time? So far, the successes in managing my time have been, in no small part, due to the type of work I have been assigned. Compiling a roster of faculty and missionary members involved with Education in historical Alaska is
What skills or knowledge are you developing or learning about through your internship? New skills and knowledge have been gained from the auxiliary tasks this semester; namely, the SQL database and scanning solution. Previously, I had deployed SQL server/services for clients, but I had never had to manage one. I gained experience creating queries and managing the consistency of the data through SQL workshop. Though the scanning solution I gained
What have you accomplished? Fixed previous errors within the Text Library of Reports to the Commissioner of Education. There was a mislabeling of years 1891-1892 and 1893 was missing. Briefly researched into an affordable book scanning solution to efficiently digitize volumes of books in a time efficient manner ~900 pages an hour Provided input into possible revisions to a grant proposal Briefly managed an SQL database for better revision management
What processes (writing processes, work processes) are you developing or learning about through your internship? Work process involve data entry workflows with Excel and mySQL – there is great potential for duplicate information to arise when reviewing these reports to the commissioner of education – Such as Locations, names, dates – and rather than going back and appending information to a previous entry (which would involve either remembering or individually
This final reflection for the 2019 fall internship covers what has been learned from this experience – what I have gained as a writer, soon-to-be-graduate, researcher, and what skill sets, competencies, and experiences were gained – its challenges and successes. Though interestingly, the internship entailed rather a little composition – leaning towards more methodology and technology research, along with data management. Although, this did allow me to leverage my previous
As the semester internship continues, I have been provided more prompts from Dr. Jenkins to assess my performance. What skills or knowledge are you developing or learning about through your internship? Currently, I am developing skills, experience, and knowledge in utilizing Qualitative Data Analysis software (QDA) suites, such as ATLAS TI and MAXQDA. I am becoming comfortable in assigning codes to particular contexts in order to construct a, hopefully, objective
I have been provided additional prompts from Dr. Jenkins. What have you accomplished? So far, I have researched potential software to aid in cataloging and concordancing the selected range of texts in order. This has included software such as AntConc, Corpkit, and WordSmith. Antconc was selected on the basis that the software has multiplatform support and ease of use; unfortunately, AntConc does not support annotation; however, such annotation’s accuracy would
