What skills or knowledge are you developing or learning about through your internship?

  • New skills and knowledge have been gained from the auxiliary tasks this semester; namely, the SQL database and scanning solution. Previously, I had deployed SQL server/services for clients, but I had never had to manage one. I gained experience creating queries and managing the consistency of the data through SQL workshop. Though the scanning solution I gained additional experience with Google Android’s SDK; namely the Android Driver Bridge (ADB) where I repurposed an Android device to be used to take photographs via remote command of pages from a text in order to be digitally bound and processed through OCR software. The main tasks have been data entry, to which I have learned a few additional hotkeys which expedited the process somewhat.

Are you drawing upon any prior experience to help you learn these skills or this knowledge?

  • My documentation draws on prior experiences and courses – specifically, technical writing, professional writing, and research methodologies. Documentation includes the structure of the educators list and archive tables – naming conventions, codes, contexts, sources, as well as how to access the data, commit additional data, and the current status of the corpus to aid in interns and researchers later who may access the data later – specifically, Dr. Stone; additionally, I am composing a memo which justifies a recommended course of action in selecting the appropriate QDA suite based on capabilities and cost. I also got to draw upon a hobby of mine I have rarely gotten to use in employment or university work – GIS (geographic Information Systems) which was used to make the map of the archive locations.

How do you think you will use these skills or this knowledge in future situations?

  • The SQL and Scanning tasks are beneficial to my industry of work – IT. The Scanning solution allowed me to create a relatively effective product which could be used in rural applications, rather than in urban university projects as was its original intent.
  • The data entry skills will be used where monotonous typing is required….
